There's a particular kind of magic that only the sea in a storm can give you, and this painting is my attempt to hold onto it.

I was at our local sauna — an old bus parked on the edge of a wide sandy beach — on a wild, blustery day. I'm not, by nature, a cold-water person. I'm the one who waits for sunshine and calm, who feels the protective voice in my body warn me away from anything that might chill me to the bone. But that day, after a long, deep heat in the sauna, I stepped into the rough, smashing waves anyway — and something shifted. The water didn't feel punishing. It felt liberating. The cold bashing waves that would normally make me flinch suddenly felt exciting, almost embracing, as though the struggles and worries I'd been carrying all week were being pulled out of me and transmuted by the rushing, foaming water.

As we climbed back toward the sauna for another round, we watched a seal rise and explore the very cresting waves we'd just been tumbling through — curious, at home, unafraid of what had frightened me moments before. The sea, I'm reminded again, is where bad feelings drop away for me. Where even physical pain loosens its grip. That transformative power of water is what I've painted into this canvas.

Queen of the Waves shows a water horse rising out of a crashing, foam-wreathed wave, dolphins playing around her form, all of it shimmering with light. Like the sea itself, she's never quite the same twice — every time you look, you may see something different: the horse, the wave, the dolphins, the light, all shifting at the edges. She arrived at just the right moment, too. We're entering the stormy season here in West Wales, when the wild winds blow and the waves come crashing onto the shore — and this feels like her true home.
