Exploring Ynys Môn
Hi friends,
I decided to take a spontaneous trip to North Wales and was lucky to find a last-minute dog-friendly B&B on the beautiful isle of Anglesey (Ynys Môn). As some of you may know driving around Wales is a task in and of itself and we usually allow for 4 hours to get out of Wales when travelling abroad. The country is small and the roads are never direct, but they are beautiful! After getting stuck in endless traffic up to Aberystwyth we finally broke free of our regular stomping grounds and once we hit Dolgellau we were on new turf!
We finally stopped at a lovely forest named Coed Y Brenin (The King’s Forest) to stretch our legs and cool our feet in the clear river. It’s definitely a spot worth returning to and exploring further but we were eager to press on and so we got back in the car and continued heading West to our destination.
The drive was spectacular and beautiful at this time of year and we finally crested a hill to see the island of Anglesey below us before joining a small traffic jam to join the narrow bridge to get us onto the island.
The island has a very different feel from the mainland as it’s quite flat - in the winter the gales must howl across the landscape from the Irish Sea. Turning back the view of the Welsh mountains is incredible and I look forward to seeing more of it today. The main view whilst facing West is the mountain on Holyhead island which we also intend to visit.
After arriving at our lovely B&B and being greeted by a Welsh Cob grazing in the garden, we headed off to Rhosneigr to find a beach to walk on. We were immediately greeted by a free air display from the Red Arrows who it turns out train from the airbase hidden behind the sand dunes! Amazing.
We found a fabulous dog friendly restaurant and shared a delicious steak then wandered down the beach a little way before I sat down for a spontaneous paint session. By then it was clear that the clouds were racing in and it wasn’t going to be a spectacular sunset so we headed back for a chilled evening on the couch.
