Custom Foil Design for Dark academia themed book
The client brief described a dark, gothic-like university perched atop a remote cliff top which would be the main focal point of the foil design required for the hard-cover. This would be a line only design and I decided to explore a false-perspective view of the university, flattening out the perspective to create an intriguing effect.
Sketching
In the sketching phase I explored how to create an interesting and pleasing shape to the cover design, using the waves at the bottom and stairways to lead the eye up into the design. Soaring arches, hidden towers and banners flying in the wind were all incorporated into the complex design.
File refinment
Upon sketch approval I then began to refine the design, using line weight to enhance the sense of depth within the otherwise flat design. Subtle textures were implied in the tile work and movement explored within the crashing waves.
