Inktober 2018
If you spend much time following artists on social media you may have come across some of the art challenges they set themselves, often themed around a certain month of the year. Inktober is perhaps the most popular and well known challenge. Created by artist Jake Parker it has become a worldwide phenomenon of new and experienced artists putting pen to paper every day of October to create a new pen and ink creation.
Being a full-time, self employed artist I knew this would be a tough challenge to stick to, some days would be fine, others would be a challenge to find the time or the motivation to create something new.
I definitely had some days where I just didn’t want to do it, and others where I feel I created truly some of my worst work! But other days I really got into the groove and was excited to keep on going, even now with it all over, I’m considering trying to keep up with this daily practice. The act of working in predominantly marker pens (simply because that’s what I had to hand) was an opportunity for me to discover a more cartoon like style, a style I used to work on back in my early days as an artist but quickly lost track of as I was drawn to more detailed work.
I’ll definitely be using some of my creations to make prints and greetings cards. Others probably won’t see the light of day ever again! ;)
