3 ways Etsy Helps shoppers & Creatives alike
The Life of an Artist category aims to share with you the inner workings of being a freelance artist, get an inside peek and see how we really make it all work!
Following on from my earlier article that went in to the different options available to artists for sharing their artwork with the world I wanted to go into more detail about how Etsy helps a wide variety of makers and artists, as well as helping you make educated and mindful decisions when shopping online.
Support your local creatives
you won't find 'made in china' labels here
Unless you live in a hole, you're likely to be well aware of the effects that global consumerism has on our environment and our local economies. Why are we spending money shipping containers across oceans and risking environmental disasters when items can be sourced from closer to home? You can be better assured of the quality by buying locally, have direct contact with the maker and support your local economy in the process. Etsy offers some great options for shopping locally, just go onto the site, search for something, then on the results page look to the left column to filter your search by location (and lots of other options besides).
not on the high street
Looking for something unique? Look no further
If you're tired of the same old stuff you see churned out in your local high street and department stores, things that are once again no doubt made in china and bought in massive bulk quantities to serve their countrywide consumers then consider checking out the product offering on Etsy. You'll find everything from unique jewellery, home decor items, cosmetics and gadgets - there really is something for everyone.
Creating an account on Etsy is free and super easy, and if you start adding items to your 'favourites' you will soon start to see a handy suggestion of other similar items curated by Etsy. It's a great way of finding unique ideas for gifts or really anything that you're searching for.
Create something custom
just drop the shop a line to make something truly unique
Another great benefit of shopping on Etsy is that you can communicate with the shop directly to discuss potential custom options for their creations. There is a wide range of personalised options that makers offer on their shops, and there's also nothing nicer than speaking with the maker directly and hearing their passion for their craft.
Most Etsy shop will allow for customisable options, keep an eye out for a note on products (as above) which indicates that the maker offers customisations, alternatively just drop them a line by looking for the "Ask a question" button next to the product to discuss options with them.
Needless to say, the perks you experience as a buyer are reflected ten-fold in the benefits to the shop owner, they get to talk directly with their customers, which for me is my favourite part, they get to create a unique treasure for you that will be lovingly crafted and sent on its way to you promptly, not to mention you're helping keep a roof over their heads! The money they receive doesn't go to some big global conglomeration, but a real-life person who has bills to pay and a dream to make it as a maker in one way or another.
