Brightness Falls by Samantha Keely Smith

I have a love hate relationship with abstract art, I think often because in most cases I see little effort that appears to go into it. Art for me is about effort and passion, if it looks like it took 5 minutes I'm left stone cold, if I can't figure out how it was done and I can see the work that's gone into it then I tend to fall in love. I know that's awfully black and white, but that's art for you isn't it? - it's all in the eye of the beholder!

Needless to say, the work of Samantha Keely Smith I fell in love with the moment I saw it. Her breathtaking use of colour and texture blows me away. In her abstract pieces I can read shimmering magical forests, raging torrential oceans, a distant cityscape or a world on fire. Her work invites exploration and imagination and I imagine are even more astounding when viewing them in person.  Her work seems to glow with an un-earthly light, as if lit from behind. If I were to go abstract... this is what I would aspire to :)
